The trucking industry is set to benefit from a groundbreaking innovation in road safety, as Transport for NSW (TfNSW) introduces the Rural Intersection Speed Zone (RISZ) system. This cutting-edge technology is designed to enhance safety for trucks at rural intersections, marking a significant step forward in road safety measures. The RISZ system, the first of its kind in NSW, is set to be trialed at the intersection of Ulan Road and the Golden Highway near Cassilis, between Merriwa and Dunedoo. This trial, which will commence in early August and run for 12 months, is a testament to the state's commitment to leveraging technology for safer roads.
The system operates using radar technology, which detects approaching vehicles on Ulan Road and temporarily lowers the speed limit on the Golden Highway from 100km/h to 70km/h. This reduction in speed creates safer gaps in traffic, allowing drivers, especially truck drivers, more time to react and merge onto the highway safely. The RISZ system is specifically tailored for rural intersections, aiming to reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes without the need for permanent speed reductions on high-speed roads.
This innovation is not entirely new, as similar systems have been successfully implemented in Victoria and other jurisdictions for several years. However, the trial in NSW is a significant milestone, reflecting the state's proactive approach to road safety.
